SCHEDULE MAKER

EILS believes that students can truly maximize their study time by having their daily class schedule effectively and efficiently organized. Therefore, EILS, through appointing a schedule maker who has the expertise to handle this duty, guarantees that this can be attained.

The person appointed for this is Ms. Rafaela Fema Batucan and is commonly known as “Fema”. She has been working as a schedule maker for two years. She is not only entrusted with making the daily class schedule of the students but she is also in charge of hourly checking of students’ attendance, organizing students’ evaluation submitted by teachers, changing class students when necessary, among others.

Until now, Ms. Batucan has successfully maintained a professional yet friendly relationship with the students.

STUDENTS’ SCHEDULE

Students are mandated to take an entrance exam prior to making their schedule. It starts at 9:00 am and is followed by student orientation.

The result of the exam is a key component in identifying the kind of subjects and classes they can have. To determine the student’s level, the scheduler follows an academic system as illustrated below:

METHOD OF CHANGING CLASS

The diverse needs of the students are always taken into account in EILS. This means that this school highly respects their preferences especially when it pertains to their classes. One exemplification is permitting the students to change their schedule, subject, class, teacher, etc. provided that a valid reason is furnished.

New students are permitted to change their initial schedule (subject, teacher, time, etc.), which will take effect immediately, at any time within their first week.

Students who have stayed longer than one(1) week are allowed to change every Friday only and will take effect the next Monday. However, students need to take these guidelines into consideration – (1) they must not be absent in the class for a week, (2) if absence can’t be prevented, students must secure an absent form and state a valid reason for their absence and, (3) they must join the roulette held a day before the changing class schedule. Failure to comply the guidelines stated means having no chance to change.

FAMOUS TEACHER

EILS has been a home to credible, dedicated and skillful teachers who are crafted by their trainings and valuable experiences as a teacher.

Teacher Albert Solon, one of the best and famous teachers in EILS, is a great example. He has been working in this academy for two years. He has proven his worth as a teacher throughout his stay here and has been highly praised by numerous students because of his dedication, hard work and passion to teach. Many students have testified how great as a teacher he is and in fact, he has been recommended by his students to other EILS students.

Last June 2015, teacher Albert was awarded as “Best Teacher of the Year”,proving his competency in teaching the language, making him one of the most-prized members of EILS family.

STUDENTS’ TASK IN EVERY COURSE

Two (2) of the most enrolled courses in EILS are Healing-Speaking Sparta (HSS) and Mega-Speaking Course (MSC). HSS has a wider scope in learning the language since it aims to develop the speaking, writing, vocabulary, grammar and reading skills of the students. However, MSC, as its name suggests, focuses on developing the students’ speaking skills. Below is a summary of the tasks students need to accomplish in each course.

COURSE

SUBJECTS

TASKS

HEALING SPEAKING SPARTA

Speaking

Students need to undergo a recorded speaking task once a week, which will then be submitted by the teacher to the office as part of the school’s close monitoring of the improvement of the student.

Writing

It is necessary that students comply the Pre-writing and Final writing tasks since these outputs will be compiled and put in their student file.
MEGA-SPEAKING COURSE

Presentation
(Individual and Group)

Students are expected to deliver different presentations with different topics and level of difficulty.
In their first month, students are required to deliver two (2) presentations and three (3) presentations in their second month.
At the end of this course, public speaking needs to be complied by the students. This means that they are expected to present a more complicated topic in a bigger venue with a considerable number of audiences. This will evaluate the degree of their learning and the level of confidence they gain.

EVENING CLASS

To ensure that students make the most of studying the language, EILS offers different special classes that cater to the various needs of English learners, each with a different core competency as illustrated below:

SUBJECTS

DESCRIPTION

GROUP GRAMMAR This class serves as reinforcement for students as it further addresses students’ questions or clarifications about topics relevant to English grammar. Students who enroll in this class can choose between a Filipino and a Korean teacher, depending on who they are more comfortable with. These teachers are honed by their experience and can effectively handle students with differing needs.
TOEIC This class focuses on TOEIC listening, reading and speaking, which are some of the essential skills students need to hone. Daily schedules are set by the teacher to ensure continuous learning by properly organizing the competencies involved here.
OPIC This class provides proper techniques on how to answer interview questions appropriately. The tasks here are divided into writing and speaking so that students have ample time to think more and have the opportunity to develop each skill.
BUSINESS CLASS This class is indicated for students who desire to apply English in a real business world. Students learn different competencies within the span of this course. They are as follows:
· Self-Introduction (First Week) – students learn how to introduce themselves to other people by utilizing different patterns and expressions in English.
· Resume (Second Week) – students are introduced to the importance of making an effective and competent resume.
· Job Interview (Third Week) – students are presented to various and effective job interview techniques to land a job they desire.
· Presentation (Fourth Week) – students learn the basics of presentation to become effective public speakers.
A certificate is then given to students upon the completion of the course.
SPEECH This class is designed for students who want to improve their speaking ability. This class is divided into different parts:
· Topic Discussion – this ensures that students fully understand what the day’s topic is.
· Listening – the teacher lets the students listen to the correct pronunciation, enunciation, accent, stressing and syllabication of words, phrases, dialogues, poetry, drama and short stories.
· Group and Individual Drills and Exercises – this activity gives students the chance to practice what they learn to enhance their skill more.
· Recording – this task serves as an evaluation in order for the teacher to identify the students’ weaknesses and find ways to address them.

MONTHLY TEST

GTAP Monthly test takes place every last Friday of the month. This TOEIC-based exam evaluates the extent of students’ learning and measures the improvement of their English skill. It is a three-hour and 200-item exam which consists of READING (30 items), LISTENING (70 items), WRITING (50 items) and SPEAKING (50 items). The result of this exam determines their current level that can somehow change the classes they have.

A reward will be given to the student who gets the highest score and to the student who has the biggest score difference compared to his/her previous GTAP score.

A STUDENT’S STORY

There is no perfect formula to learn English in an instant. It requires time and effort to at least learn the basics of the language, let alone the financial costs one has to invest to become a competent English speaker.
Amy was a typical student who came to the Philippines with the desire to learn and speak English competently. She had studied English since she was a middle school student; however, it was still difficult for her to express herself in English.
Her teachers tried to look into the problem and later found out that she lacked the application of her learning. According to her, her classes were more on memorizing words, patterns, etc. and she did not have enough opportunity to apply what she had learned. Simply put, she had nobody to interact with.
After determining what the problem was, her teachers worked hand-in-hand to devise a plan suitable for her. They exposed her to the language and gave her more chances to communicate herself to other people. After all, this school focuses on improving the learners’ speaking skill. As a result, in no time, Amy’s improvement was very visible and in fact, in her third month, she got the third highest score and was the student who had the biggest score difference compared to the entrance exam score, caused by the big increase of her speaking skill score.
Although the advice given to Amy worked, this might not be true to other students. It is said that there are countless factors that can influence students’ learning. That is why, we, at EILS, continue to find ways to address the diverse learning needs of our students and be part of their future success stories.
