Introduction: General Manager at Pines
Hello, everyone! My name is Justin. I have been working as a general manager for more than three years. Prior to my current position, I had experiences in teaching TOEIC, English grammar, TOEFL, TOEIC Speaking and pronunciation to Korean students. My passion is teaching and helping beginners encourages me to do more research on how to teach effectively. My work is focusing more on dealing with students’ concerns, making an outline of class schedules, orientations, and streamlining problem-solving process for students.
I came to the Philippines when I was a teenager, went to a high school and graduated from Saint Louise University, majoring in Entrepreneurship. There are quite a lot of students who are preparing to enter a university here in the Philippines and my experience has helped students who were interested in studying in the Philippines.
I find fulfillment when I see my students mingle with foreign friends with confidence. And I hope that there will be more diverse foreign friends to come to Pines and exchange their cultures while improving their English skills.

How to request for a change of my teacher/class
If a student requests for a change of his/her teacher, these are the procedures to follow.
Step 1. Counseling and Relaying
A student approaches a Korean or Japanese manager for counseling.
After that, the manager will relay important points to a campus faculty head who is in charge of teachers’ affairs.
Step 2. Class Observation
The faculty head will observe the class of the student for about 10 minutes.
This enables the head to check a class atmosphere, class progress, teacher’s teaching method, attitudes towards the student, etc.
Step 3. Meeting with the student and teacher separately
After the class observation, if the student doesn’t want to continue;
The faculty head checks if there is a more suitable teacher for the student/class. A class time might be the student’s break time if there is no available teacher at the actual class hour.
If the student would like to continue with the teacher;
The faculty head will give class feedback to the teacher for improvements.

Refresher | Cooyeesan | 1 to 3 |
Bridging | Cooyeesan | 4 to 5 |
Chapis Advanced | Chapis | 6 to 7 and English Test Modules |
Levels from 1 to 3 belong to beginners to pre-intermediate.
Assignments for Refresher students
1. Making a sentence: Students are given pictures, words or patterns that they learned in class. For them to practice and make their own sentences, teachers let them make 3 to 5 sentences using those patterns and words.
2. Partial dictation: Dictation activities are done in a group listening class. For students to review and mimic words, teachers give them extra homework like partial dictation. (Dictation: Listen to au audio file and write down as it is heard. )
3. Reading Aloud: There is a Reading Aloud class in every level. This is to help students read naturally with correct pronunciation, stress, blending, and intonation. For Refresher students, teachers focus more on correct pronunciation and stress. After this class, a student is required to practice reading one passage for more than 10 times.
4. Grammar: Lower levels of students would like to apply for what they learn in a grammar class. Every after one chapter, teachers give them extra homework for students to use in a sentence.
Levels from 4 to 5 belong to beginners to pre-intermediate.
Assignments for Bridging students
1. Making a sentence: Students are given idioms, words or patterns that they learned in class. For them to practice and make their own sentences, teachers let them make 3 to 5 sentences using those patterns and words. Or sometimes students should create a story using given idioms.
2. Writing a paragraph: These two levels should focus on constructing a long paragraph. Since students will have to write essays when they go to a higher level. Themes are various and students may choose a theme of a paragraph.
3. Short speeches: Levels 4 to 5 students are given more opportunities to respond to certain topics in discussion and conversation classes. To quickly think and generate ideas, teachers throw lots of questions related to preferences, experience, plans, hobbies, study, school life, etc. Students need to be prepared not to waste their time in their class time.
1:1 class
Option and Mandatory Class after regular classes finish.
Option Class | After one term, students may choose one or two option classes. This rule is applied to second month and above students, not incoming students. |
Mandatory Class | All incoming students in Cooyeesan for the first term should join ‘Mandatory Class’ from 8 pm to 10 pm. They can’t choose option classes. |
Option Class
1) Guitar Class: This class aims to teach students how to play the guitar by listening to English instructions. Students learn basic cords in a term.
2) Survival English Expressions: This class is to help students learn the basic and practical expressions used in daily life. The vocabularies and expressions will surely be of great help when students communicate other people.
3) KPS: This is optional and only a small group of students can join. This is to help students improve their English skills fast, especially speaking and listening. This class starts at 8 pm and ends at 11.30pm from Monday to Friday. This special program never allows any tardiness or absences for a term. Students can’t join this program in the middle of a term and all are required to attend a program orientation. At the end of an orientation, all of them should sign on a pledge. There is a fee for this program. (Php 3,200/ term)
4) Monitored Self-study: All students from the second month are required to join this from 8pm for 1 hour every day. By doing this, all students are monitored all at the same time and during this hour; all of them can concentrate on their homework, preview and review.
Mandatory Class
1) Reading Aloud: the book used in Reading Aloud classes is utilized for this activity. Teachers-in-charge give students extra tips on how to read correctly and naturally.
2) Vocabulary Test: Students are given a list of vocabularies and they take a test every day.

Popular Teachers
T Denjo (Left)
My name is Denjo A. Aguda. I have been teaching in PIA for almost three years and I have been an ESL teacher for about six years.
There are three things I love about being an ESL teacher. First, I get the chance to meet and teach people from all over Asia. I get the chance to know more about the world and the people in it. The second thing is that I can create materials which will improve the skills of my students. I mostly teach listening subjects so I get to challenge and improve the listening skills of my students through the materials I create. I also teach discussion, writing, reading and module-based classes. The third thing I like is the satisfaction I feel after a term, knowing that my students improved their English. I can tap my back and say “Well done teacher.” In addition to this, I feel happy whenever I hear the words “Thank you teacher.” from my students… it’s a great way to say that they too are satisfied.
I think the best way to learn English is to be interested and to be familiar. Students should know that they must anchor their learning by being interested. If they are interested in movies, they can learn the language by watching English movies… as well as listening to songs or listening to speeches and lectures. But of course, nothing beats the help of a teacher.
Keeping an open mind helps students learn more about the language. If students are not afraid to learn new things and try new challenges they will be more familiar with the language hence improving their skills. Furthermore, they will be more confident if they are more familiar with the language through various learning techniques.
T Amathea (Right)
Hello I’m Amathea. I’ve been teaching in PIA for six years. I teach 1:1 (Reading, Patterns, and Discussion) and 4on1 (Listening, Discussion) classes. I love to teach listening class the most. A lot of students hate listening class because they say it is the most difficult subject but I make it a point for the students to enjoy and appreciate this subject because it is very important in communicating. I like seeing students improve. Even the simplest change makes a difference.
How to study English?
Try and explore different ways and then choose what is suitable for you. Be flexible and open to many challenges. Learning any language is difficult but you have to use them to remember it all the time. Have faith in your ability and remember to enjoy the learning experience. See you all here at Pines!

Students’ Pines stories
Students who belong to Refresher Campus would want to study in Bridging Campus. Therefore their goal is to go to Bridging Campus. Many students especially from level 2 and 3 ask a school manager about how to get a high score in tests. Remember this. Students in Refresher Course are mainly beginners or they have some knowledge on English grammar, but they don’t know how to apply in speaking. Our school managers give similar advice to beginners.
First, read a passage a lot of times.
Majority of students who comes to the Philippines to study English is beginners. One common mistake that they make is that they spend less time on reading aloud. Most students prefer reading silently. We do NOT advise this way for them to become a good speaker.
Second, vocabularies are more important than studying grammar.
Many students think that memorizing grammar rules are the fastest way to become a fluent speaker.
But for beginners, they need to study vocabularies in a context so it will be easier for them to use it in a sentence.
Third, make a use of sentence variations.
English textbooks have good examples and it helps learners practice sentences. However, those are just examples, not each one of our students’ own sentences. They could change a verb tense, a subject, an object, an adverb, or affirmative to negative. Sentence variations can be made in many ways. A good sentence will be made by practicing this way of variations.
Pines does believe that practice makes perfect. See you at Pines!
