リピート率が高いフィリピン・ダバオSeattle留学スクールは英語テスト機関ETS公認のTOEFL iBTテストセンターで、欧米留学を準備する留学生に人気です。ヘッドティーチャーから留学スクールについて紹介してもらいました。

My name is Christine Joy L. Cardino, the Head Teacher of Seattle Language Center. I gauge, evaluate, and monitor performances of both students and teachers. Being in this position requires aptitude, knowledge, flexible personality, and effective strategies.  Aside from my designation, I also have teaching loads; all of them are TOEFL Speaking. As a teacher, I always ensure that my students are given enough time and attention to help them meet their goals. Considerably, the most challenging aspect of my job is supervising the teaching styles of the teachers and assessing the learning expansion of the students. Thus, in order to be cognizant of the teaching-learning situation of this academy I am very much hands-on with updating the daily schedule. Listed below are my underlying duties as regards the daily schedule:

• Prepare students’ schedule on their first day
• Update students’ daily schedule from time to time
• Change students’ teachers upon their request
• Change/eliminate students’ classes upon their request
• Change students’ class time based on availability and upon their request
• Internalize the matter regarding the changes
• Talk to the persons involved if the case is serious
• Monitor the performance of both students and teachers once the change takes effect

The procedure of changing classes (including changing teachers)

If the students want to change their class or teacher, they have to fill out a “Request form” and submit it to office manager. After collecting it, a head teacher or office manager observes the class and find the problem. If the problems that the students mentioned are acceptable, they can have new class or teacher. It usually takes 2-3 days. Regarding changing a teacher, students really need to present “Proper reason” why they want to change the teacher.  Additionally, students cannot choose teachers whom they want. The head teacher has the authority to choose teachers and change classes.

The schedule for the new students on their first day
(on the assumption that the students arrive on weekends)

On Monday morning, students come to the office with their passport and 5 pieces of photo (2 inch by 2 inch size) by 8:30 am.

The schedule on the first day

8:30 am ~ 2:00 pm Taking a test (including lunch time)
2:00 pm ~ 3:30 pm Taking a rest
3:30 pm ~ 4:30bpm Orientation on school rules
4:00 pm ~ 5:20 pm Taking a rest
5:20 pm ~ 6:00 pm Dinner
6:00 pm ~ 8:00 pm Going shopping with a manager

* It has a different time of test – ESL for 2 hours /TOEIC and TOEFL for 4 hours)
* ESL students can start regular class from the afternoon on the first day if they want to except orientation time from 3:30 to 4:30pm.

After the class

The regular classes finish at 5:20 pm. After the free time, all students need to attend evening self- studying time from 7:30pm to 10:00pm in the library. (This activity is mandatory.)

Penalty from being absent or late for the classes

Students must enter their class room before the bell rings. If students come to the class 10 minutes late or more, it will be regarded as tardiness.  If students come to the class 20 minutes late or more, it will be regarded as absence. Three times tardiness is equal to one absence. Three times absence within 4 weeks will be dismissed. If a student is sick or unable to attend the class, he/she has to fill out the form, “Special Request for Absence”. The absence and tardiness record will be accumulated only within 4 week school term, and it will be refreshed.
Evening self-studying time (7:30p.m.-10:00p.m.) is also regarded as a class. If students fail to attend it, the same rule will be applied.

About a test

We have 3 kinds of test.
1. Morning test : Every student must take vocabulary test or memorize sentences for 20 minutes in the morning from 8:00 to 8:20.
2. Weekly test : On Fridays, a weekly test for each subject will be given with the coverage of the week’s lessons.
3. Mock test : TOEFL students can take TOEFL mock test once a month without pay. If the student has a test within 4 weeks, he/she can take TOEFL mock test every week.
(This rule on mock test is applied only to the students who enroll for more than 4 weeks)

Students’ comments about school

1. Seattle is a good place to study. The best facility for me is the room for self-study. Moreover, it has sufficient Wi-Fi connection, which is beneficial to search some information about TOEFL and to contact with friends or family. Food is also good because they serve a certain kind of fruits in every meal. I like it. Thanks to these, I was able to concentrate on studying. (from Shota)

2. Curriculum in Seattle is flexible and effective. To be specific, in my case, I registered only four classes of each TOEFL sections per day, even though I can take seven classes per day. This is because I prefer to do self study in the library on my break time. Also, teachers in the school are really friendly and kind, in addition, they provide us great circumstances, and they have much knowledge and enough skills of educating TOEFL. (from Taku)

3. The most significant point which I want to insist is student’s attitude. Because this school has a definite goal, which is to help students get better score in TOEFL, students who really want to enter foreign universities come here. Thus, almost all of the students have strong motivation to study English, and this surrounding stimulates student’s incentive to learn English with each other. You can definitely acquire the best condition to study TOEFL in this school. (from William)
