TALK Academy ENE Center
1.INTRODUCE THE SCHEDULER
I am Teacher Rachel of E&E Center. I started as a teacher and it was a very fulfilling work for me. Being a Head teacher is a totally different field. Taking care of teachers and students is a very big responsibility. I have been here for five years and still everything is a work in progress. The bulk of my job is to make the schedule of students. Giving them teachers that will meet their individual needs is not easy and giving them a time table that would fit their individual routine is hard as well. A very good balance makes their stay here with us informative and productive.
2.SCHEDULE OF NEW STUDENTS FROM THE PLACEMENT TO CLASS ASSIGNMENT
For TOEIC students and IELTS students:
They arrive here in Baguio City around 6:00 to 8:00 in the morning, unless problem occurs like delayed flights and other things. Upon arrival, room assignments and keys are given to them immediately after which they eat their breakfast and rest in preparation for their placement test.
At 1:00pm, they go straight to the Cafeteria (for TOEIC students), and the IELTS Room (for IELTS student) where the placement test is done.
They are first oriented with the parts of the TOEIC test and instructions are given to them on how the test is done.
They will first have the Listening Test which they will take for 45 minutes, followed by the Reading Test which lasts for 75 minutes.
Instructions are given to them before the test begins
It has 4 parts:
Listening – 30 minutes
Reading – 60 minutes
Writing -60 minutes
Speaking – 14 minutes
After the placement test, registration and orientation regarding the rules and regulations of the Academy are given by the managers.
And then, class schedule, books and vocabulary are given to them.
Welcome party is a time where they meet all the new students of different centers for a get together which wraps up the activity for the day.
The following day, Tuesday, official class begins.
They have 6 subjects for the day.
Writing Task 1
Writing Task 2
Vocabulary test is from7:00-8:00pm
Daily TOEIC test is from 8:00-10:00pm
student’s papers are corrected right away and scripts are given to them so that they can check their mistakes and be ready for the discussion with their teachers the following morning.
IELTS students will have mandatory self-study class closely monitored by night class teachers from 8:00-10:00pm.
3.SCHEDULE CHANGING PROCEDURES
We have changing of schedule twice a month. Students can change one of their teachers in two weeks. But in case of teachers who quit, that student is given the chance to change two of his/her teachers.
They are given the whole day until 6:00pm to pass their curriculum suggestion.
They are instructed to give their reasons why they want to change that particular teacher.
The next day, the students who choose same teacher at exactly the same time are evaluated according to their evaluation from their teachers and the penalties they have incurred (tardiness, absence, excuse).
The student who wasn’t able to get his desired teacher is then called to the office. Scheduler will suggest to him teachers who can teach him the subject that he wants. And he will decide whether to keep his old teacher, follow the scheduler’s suggestion or choose teacher on his own. In most cases, their concern is settled according to their needs before they leave the office.
4.ACADEMIC REGULATIONS AND PENALTY
We are considered as the testing center so our goal is to make use of our time productively by teaching these TOEIC and IELTS students the knowledge that they need to get a very good score in their respective official test.
They need to participate with the vocabulary test every day to widen the range of the words they know and make their comprehension better.
They are monitored from start to end of the two-hour TOEIC test every night.
Mandatory self-study class for IELTS students is strictly observed by the night class teachers and managers.
Penalties are given to students who chose not to abide the academy’s rules and regulations.
Counseling is done every now and then with students who commit same violation.
Students are also given the chance to voice out their opinions about their teachers, facilities and other concerns that need immediate attention.

6.AFTER SCHOOL ACADEMIC PROGRAM
E&E students are very pre-occupied with their studies from Monday to Friday but we still find time to break the monotony by encouraging them to join Voluntary service which is scheduled on a Saturday of every month. We visit orphanage and do clean-up drive among others. We aim to show the hospitality of Filipinos which is a very big part of our culture and to promote togetherness among our students coming from different races.
7.INTRODUCE POPULAR TEACHERS IN EACH CENTER
My honor to introduce 3 popular teachers of E&E Center
T. James is one of our TOEIC teachers. He is very strict when it comes to studying. He requires students to have their notebook inside his class. He expects his students to remember the lesson that he teaches every day. He can teach all parts of TOEIC without notes at hand. Sometimes, he is misunderstood with his style but still during changing day he is the most requested teacher.
T. Bar is one of the best grammar teachers we have here at E&E center. She explains grammar rules and patterns in detail. She has so much patience in dealing with her student’s individual needs and very generous to share her knowledge with her fellow teachers. Young as she is, I can see more potential in her in the years to come.
T. Mac is both popular in teaching TOEIC Listening and TOEIC Speaking. His pronunciation is well admired by students. He is very comfortable in speaking the English language. He has that certain charisma that students love. T. Mac is with Talk Academy for almost five years now.
8.TEST PROGRESS METHOD
We have TOEIC test every night and it is discussed with the students the following day. Teachers will explain to them the correct answers and the reasons why their answers are incorrect. They will dissect each number to come up with a full understanding of the concept. Teachers are encouraged to give homework to student’s every day to assess the student’s progress on the topics tackled during the discussion.
Test is given every two weeks on a Monday. And that test is discussed with the learner in two weeks. Teachers will present activities inside the class to familiarize learner on the parts and objectives of the IELTS exam, strategies on vocabulary expansion, ways to achieve fluency development and pronunciation enhancement and giving corrective feedback to learner.
9. ANY STORY YOU’VE HEARD ABOUT STUDENT’S STUDIES IN TALK ACADEMY
So many success stories that I’ve heard during my five years of stay here in Talk Academy.
Students starting his TOEIC score with us at 300 plus and reaching 800 plus before she/he goes back to his country. Students coming back to study with us again for the second or third time. Students who can hardly utter a word in English and eventually expresses himself in full sentence at the end of his stay. Students who hit 900 plus score in the Official TOEIC Exam after studying the techniques and strategies with their teachers.
These stories encouraged us more to seriously devote our time to finding ways on how to teach our students better. Their success in their chosen field is our success too. We believe that learning is a two-way process. It’s a collaboration of teacher’s effort to prepare study materials for students as well as student’s effort too to study hard every day. That way, both goals are met and we will surely always come up with a success story that everyone would take pride of knowing.
